What Does CPR Certification Cover? Everything You Need to Know

MEDNEWS - Emergentlee

The good news? CPR training is designed to be practical and hands-on. You don’t need a medical background to learn these skills. Here’s what you can expect.

What Is CPR Certification?

CPR, or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, is a lifesaving technique used when someone’s heart stops beating or they stop breathing normally.

A CPR certification course teaches you how to recognize an emergency, respond appropriately, and perform CPR until emergency medical help arrives. You’ll learn the information behind the skill, but more importantly, you’ll actually get to practice it.

What Will I Learn in a CPR Class?

Most CPR certification courses cover several important emergency skills, including:

Hands-Only CPR
You’ll practice proper hand placement, compression depth, and how to maintain the recommended rate of about 100–120 compressions per minute.

Rescue Breathing
You’ll learn when rescue breaths may be needed and how to combine breaths with chest compressions.

How to Use an AED
AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) can be found in many workplaces, schools, gyms, airports, and other public spaces. Your training will walk you through how to safely use one during a cardiac emergency.

Choking Emergencies
You’ll learn how to recognize when someone is choking and what to do for adults, children, and infants.

Infant and Child CPR
Many certification courses also teach CPR techniques specifically for babies and children since the approach is different from adult CPR.

How Long Does CPR Certification Last?

Most CPR certifications are valid for two years from the date you complete your course.

Once your certification expires, you’ll need to complete a renewal or recertification course to keep it current.

Your workplace, school, licensing agency, or professional organization may have its own requirements, so it’s always a good idea to check what type of certification you need before registering.

Who Should Get CPR Certified?

CPR isn’t just for healthcare professionals or first responders.

Training can be especially helpful for parents and caregivers, teachers and school staff, coaches and fitness professionals, childcare providers, event and venue staff, workplace employees, and anyone whose job or volunteer position requires certification.

Even when certification isn’t required, knowing what to do during an emergency can make a huge difference. Emergencies don’t always happen when a medical professional is nearby.

In-Person vs. Online CPR Certification

Online CPR courses can be helpful for learning the information, but CPR is a hands-on skill.

Many employers and organizations require a certification that includes an in-person skills component. Practicing on a manikin allows you to work on your compression technique, receive feedback, practice using an AED, and become more comfortable responding to an actual emergency.

There’s a big difference between watching someone perform CPR and practicing it yourself.
